About NJHSSponsored by Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sihalla, The National Junior Honor Society was established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
Five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter. Ridgeview Middle School's chapter of NJHS works on projects to improve our community. We do things such as collecting coins for a coat drive, collecting cans for a food drive, volunteering at the local animal shelter, cleaning up our school, and helping other schools. By doing this we hope to help improve our community. All of our members are chosen by a faculty council based on the tenets of NJHS. Ridgeview Middle School NJHS Membership Requirements for 2017-18 School Year: Current seventh graders who have been at Ridgeview Middle School for at least one full semester and who have a cumulative grade point average of 95.00 or higher from 6th and 7th grade through the 4th 6 week grading period are eligible for membership in the Ridgeview Middle School NJHS Chapter. Every student who meets the scholarship requirement listed above will be invited to apply for membership by completing a packet which will give the opportunity to illustrate how the other tenets of the organization are shown through the student's service, leadership, and character. Once students receive letters to apply for membership based on their GPA, then they must return the application packet to the sponsors by the due date. No late packets will be accepted. The deadline given to the students is a firm deadline. If chosen as a member of the NJHS, students will be responsible for: · Maintaining a cumulative average of 92.5 or above throughout 8th grade Maintaining a high standard of character in school and outside of school · Completing six service hours per grading period outside of school day · Participating in events held in school (ie school spirit days, NJHS sponsored service projects) · Attending required meetings · Paying one time dues of $20 upon initiation · Participating in UIL academic events and/or PTA Reflections contest
